“I can’t believe this is America”: U.S. Veteran who voted for Trump says ICE arrest of his wife shattered everything he believed

Signs of strain are emerging for President Donald Trump, even among supporters who once backed him without hesitation. On Runaway Country, host Alex Wagner highlighted a moment from a congressional hearing that underscored the growing sense of regret, featuring a veteran who said he deeply regretted voting for Trump after his wife — who had lived in the United States for decades — was arrested by ICE.

“Why did you vote for him?” a member of Congress asked.

“Because I was an idiot,” the veteran replied. “Evangelical Christian people were lied to, if you really want to know the truth. And that’s exactly what happened.” He said he believed deportations would only target criminals, but instead his wife — someone devoted to serving others — was detained. “My wife and I, when we don’t work, we’re ministers. We help the needy. That’s what we do. And that’s who they’re arresting.”

Wagner responded by situating the exchange within a wider pattern of disillusionment among Trump voters. “If you look at the bottom of the screen, this is a panel about rising health care costs, which is like the double whammy,” she told Nicole Wallace on MSNBC.

She was blunt in her assessment. “He is debasing Americans. He is tearing families apart. And the central premise of his reelection, which was to make America more affordable, is a complete fallacy, a complete lie.” Wagner said one person she spoke with saw their monthly health insurance premium soar from $100 to $800.

“It is one thing to just not deliver,” she said. “But to act in the way that he has, which is so dehumanizing, so cruel… this is why we are seeing the beginnings of real cracks with this president and his base.”

How sad it is to vote against your interests

Name

“his wife — who had lived in the United States for decades — was arrested by ICE”

Was she in the US *legally* for decades, or was she committing a crime by living in the US illegally?

Everyone outside your cult told you this would happen. You chose to scoff. Talking about “helping the needy” and then ignoring *Trump’s entire life*. I feel bad for the wife, but the husband? Absolutely got what he voted for, completely deserved.

No sympathy

He voted for this. He just wanted it to happen to other people’s families, not his own. There is no hate like Christian love.

Kate

Have the life you voted for asshole

Chris

“Because I was an idiot,” Wait. You already said he voted for Trump. This is redundant.
