Sydney Sweeney’s already having a pretty busy 2024, and she’s adding more to the list. Deadline’s reporting that the Euphoria star is in talks to lead A24 and Picturestart’s The Masque of the Red Death. This one’s based on Edgar Allan Poe’s 1842 short story, but don’t expect a straight-up adaptation. It’s described as a “wildly revisionist and darkly comedic” take on the classic.
For anyone not familiar, the original Masque of the Red Death follows a prince hiding in his abbey to escape a deadly plague known as the Red Death. Poe’s story is a staple in gothic literature, so this version will definitely stand out. Charlie Polinger’s handling the script and direction, with production set to begin this year. Sweeney’s name attached already has people excited.
But that’s not all. Sydney’s also filming The Housemaid alongside Amanda Seyfried. It’s based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel about a woman (Sweeney) who becomes a housemaid for a wealthy couple, played by Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. As you can guess, things get twisted, and she uncovers some seriously dark family secrets.
This one’s directed by Paul Feig, the guy behind Bridesmaids and A Simple Favor. Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote the script, so expect some serious tension in the storyline. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Erin Westerman praised the casting, saying that Sweeney and Seyfried are perfect for their roles.
Alongside the two leads, The Housemaid also stars Italian actor Michele Morrone, and the excitement around this film is growing fast. People are really looking forward to seeing how Sweeney and Seyfried play off each other.
The film is locked in for a Christmas Day 2025 release in US cinemas. This means that by the end of this year, we’ll be seeing Sweeney in not one, but two major films, both offering completely different vibes. The Housemaid will keep the suspense going, and The Masque of the Red Death will bring some gothic horror.
The Housemaid is scheduled to be released in US on December 25, 2025.
