“I won’t allow them to sell their bodies online”: Florida GOP candidate pushes a new ‘sin tax’ on OnlyFans creators

Controversial Florida gubernatorial hopeful James Fishback is positioning himself close to current Gov. Ron DeSantis, pitching a campaign built around putting home-grown Floridians first — unless, as he frames it, you happen to be an OnlyFans creator, a stance now drawing attention across political, legal and digital-media circles.

“As Florida governor in year one, I will push for the first of its kind OnlyFans Sin Tax,” Fishback, a Republican, said in a video reshared on his X account. “If you are a so-called OnlyFans creator in Florida, you are going to pay 50% to the state on whatever you so-called earn via that online degeneracy platform.” The proposal, which touches on taxation law, online commerce regulation and free-speech issues, has quickly become one of the most talked-about elements of his campaign.

Fishback, who has previously praised antisemitic white nationalist Nick Fuentes, went further by singling out OnlyFans creator Sophie Rain in a post promoting the idea. “Hey @SophieRaiin, Pay up or quit OnlyFans. As Florida Governor, I will not allow a generation of smart and capable young women to sell their bodies online,” he wrote. Rain, who said last year that she earned $83 million on OnlyFans despite never sharing explicit material, did not appear especially concerned by the remark.

Fishback said the revenue from his proposed “sin tax” would be directed toward Florida’s education system, anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers, and “the first of its kind mental health czar for men,” a role he argues is needed for men who he claims have been made to feel ashamed of their “toxic masculinity,” a statement that has also sparked debate among mental-health advocates and constitutional-rights groups.

“I don’t want young women who could otherwise be mothers, raising families, rearing children, I don’t want them selling their bodies to sick men online,” Fishback said. “I don’t want young, impressionable men who have strayed from Christ, who have strayed from our Lord and savior to be drawn into lust.” His comments have triggered wider discussion about digital labor rights, gender equality, and the legal treatment of online creators.

Critics note that Fishback’s framing ignores male OnlyFans creators entirely, places responsibility for men’s behavior on women, and implies women have only two choices — “selling their bodies” or becoming mothers. Still, by his own logic, Florida men appear to be major participants in the platform he condemns.

Data from OnlyGuider, a third-party OnlyFans search engine, ranked two Florida cities among the top three nationwide for OnlyFans spending in 2025. Orlando and Miami trailed only Atlanta in total OF purchases last year, according to the figures, highlighting the scale of the digital-content economy in the state.

Positioning himself as a DeSantis 2.0 figure, Fishback has so far failed to secure backing from President Donald Trump, who instead endorsed his rival, Rep. Byron Donalds. Reporting also shows Fishback has leaned on racist conspiracy theories as part of his campaign messaging and echoed white nationalist rhetoric. NBC News reported that Florida’s Broward County School District “cut ties” with Fishback in 2022 after allegations surfaced that he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor, accusations Fishback has denied, calling them “completely false” to NBC News.

In a statement to Playboy, Fishback again rejected the allegations, saying in part, “The court in Florida’s Second Judicial Circuit reviewed these accusations, conducted two lengthy hearings, and fully exonerated me.”
