Kristi Noem appeared unaware Thursday afternoon that she had been dismissed from her post as she addressed a room full of law enforcement officials.
While Donald Trump was announcing Noem’s abrupt removal on social media, the Homeland Security secretary was delivering the keynote speech at the Major Cities Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. During the session, law enforcement leaders asked questions and offered compliments to Noem—but none raised the issue of her sudden job change.
At one moment in her remarks, Noem referenced Trump’s upcoming plan to introduce his “Shield of the Americas” policy on Saturday, where he is expected to appear alongside other cabinet members to outline a strategy aimed at combating drug cartels and trafficking networks. It remained unclear if she knew that Trump had reassigned her as the program’s “special envoy.”
Fox White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich reported on X that Trump had spoken with Noem shortly before he posted the announcement on Truth Social.
Despite the developing news, Noem repeatedly discussed future plans as DHS secretary as if nothing had changed. She said she planned to meet with New York state sheriffs “real soon” and noted she would “continue to talk” with governors and state lawmakers about working with federal immigration enforcement. Although Noem may technically remain in office until the end of March, her repeated references to upcoming responsibilities sounded unusual given that she had just been removed from the role.
“I hope you have fun, I’m sorry I can’t stick around,” she said as she wrapped up her speech, briefly stopping for photos before quickly leaving the stage.
Soon after stepping away from the podium, Noem released a statement expressing appreciation to Trump for what she described as her new role. “The Western Hemisphere is absolutely critical for U.S. security. In this new role, I will be able to build on the partnerships and national security expertise, I forged over the last 13 months as Secretary of Homeland Security,” she wrote on X.
Noem’s time leading DHS began to unravel earlier this week following two difficult appearances before the Senate and House Judiciary Committees. During the hearings, she faced tough questioning and struggled to explain a $220 million border security advertising campaign featuring herself—an initiative that Trump has since said he never approved.
Reports had already begun circulating earlier Thursday that Trump was reaching out to Republican lawmakers to discuss potential replacements for Noem—and Mullin’s name quickly emerged as one of the leading possibilities.
Online reactions quickly spiraled into a wave of mockery and anger aimed not only at Kristi Noem but also at Donald Trump and the chaotic way the administration handles its own officials. Some commenters ridiculed Trump’s policies outright. One person joked, “Shield of America’s? He’s been watching Marvel movies again.” Another mocked the bizarre situation surrounding the announcement by writing, “What will they do with the Flying Bedroom now???” Critics also took aim directly at Noem’s new role, with one commenter sarcastically posting, “She didn’t get fired, she got a promotion.. she’s Obergruppenführer Noem now .” Others piled on with dark humor about where Trump might send her next, with someone writing, “She’s going to be the special envoy to the sentinel islands.”
Several reactions suggested the firing could be the start of wider turmoil inside Trump’s circle. “And now they start to fall like Domino’s,” one commenter wrote, while another jabbed at the surreal timing of the announcement: “Must not have her Truth Social notifications turned on.” The criticism then turned even harsher, with some accusing Trump’s team of burying previous scandals. One user wrote bluntly, “So they will never have to answer for the ethical scandal with her fucking her subordinate or the whole giving $170,000,000 to a company formed by friends of hers less than 2 weeks prior….” Another commenter mocked the moment Noem allegedly learned about the move, writing, “I hear when she found out she looked like somebody killed her puppy.” Together, the barrage of reactions painted a picture of an administration critics say is defined by chaos, controversy, and a president who treats major government roles like plot twists in a reality show rather than serious leadership.
