New poll finds MAGA voters breaking down under Trump’s economic mess: “We’re struggling out here”

President Donald Trump’s base has long been defined by unwavering loyalty — standing with him through controversies, impeachments, and political turmoil. But new polling indicates that even his most steadfast backers are now beginning to feel the financial pain of his policies, and many may have reached a “breaking point” as everyday costs continue to soar.

A new Politico poll released Saturday found that the “average” Trump supporter said they would be willing to pay $65 more per month in taxes to advance the former president’s agenda. However, after this week’s string of Democratic victories, those same voters appear to be showing signs of fatigue. Politico reporter Jessica Piper suggested that Trump’s policies might have finally crossed a line for his loyal base.

“The POLITICO Poll results are a reminder that — while many of Trump’s supporters have a reputation for intense loyalty — they also have a breaking point,” Piper wrote. “And Tuesday’s election results suggest that despite Republican voters’ willingness to pay a literal price for Trump’s policies, the Trump agenda to date may have pushed voters too far.”

Much of the current frustration comes from Trump’s tariff policies, which have caused Americans to shoulder as much as 55% of the higher costs on imported goods. At the same time, energy prices have spiked sharply — rising at twice the rate of inflation since the pandemic — despite Trump’s repeated promises to slash energy costs “by half within 12 months.” Critics say his administration’s efforts to roll back clean energy initiatives have only made the problem worse.

The impact on household budgets is undeniable. Grocery prices have surged nearly 30% in five years, while wage growth has lagged far behind. These pocketbook issues became central talking points in Democratic campaigns that achieved significant wins this week, underscoring a shift among voters who appear increasingly focused on affordability over partisan loyalty.

Trump, for his part, has defended his record, highlighting what he calls “affordability measures” while dismissing Democratic alternatives as nothing more than a “con job.” But for many within the MAGA movement, the frustration seems to be reaching a breaking point. Once rock-solid political loyalty is now colliding with real-life struggles at the grocery store, gas pump, and monthly bills.

Even among Trump’s most loyal followers, patience seems to be wearing thin. As costs continue their upward climb, the quiet discontent reflected in the poll delivers a clear warning: for many Trump voters, loyalty can’t outweigh economic hardship forever.

And with prices still rising and no immediate relief in sight, some of the same voters who once cheered Trump’s policies are beginning to voice a reluctant but growing truth — “We’re struggling.”
