A fresh poll in the United States shows that the majority of Americans do not believe President Donald Trump is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize.
The survey, conducted by The Washington Post and Ipsos with 2,513 participants between Sept. 11 and 15, asked citizens nationwide about Trump’s nomination for the prestigious award. Results revealed that 76% of Americans said Trump does not deserve the honor, while 22% said he does. Among Republicans, opinions were evenly split, with 49% saying he deserves it and 49% saying he does not — highlighting division even within his own party.
The same poll also noted that 60% of respondents disapproved of Trump’s handling of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, while 58% disapproved of his response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Interestingly, the survey further showed that 54% of Americans felt that former President Barack Obama also did not merit the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded in 2009.
Trump, however, has secured multiple nominations for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan formally nominated him, citing his “diplomatic role and leadership” in its latest tensions with India. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally submitted a nomination letter on Trump’s behalf. Cambodia also nominated him for his role in brokering a ceasefire with Thailand. Additionally, leaders from five African nations — Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal — voiced support for Trump’s candidacy, pointing to what they see as his contributions to global stability.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said they were considering putting Trump forward for recognition, citing his efforts to promote peace in their region. Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff went further, telling a Cabinet meeting that the president had “stopped seven wars so far” and was deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.
